EDUCATION BOARD.

The Taranaki Education Board m< last evening. All the members we; present. Mr J. Wade presided. PROGRESS OF BUILDING WORKS The architect reported that th Opunake teacher's residence . was con pleted. At Stratford the conversion c the woodwork room into a cookery rooi was being carried out, aitd an e\ fort would be made to finish it befor the beginning of next month. Th timber for the woodwork room had no yet arrived. The additions to the Mid hirst school were completed. Th< school building at Kaeaeae had beei completed. In discussing the report Mr Kennedy complained of the insanitary, conditioi of the Frankley Road ''.school. Th< Board decided to visit the school nexl morning. The report was then adopted CHAIRMAN'S REPORT. . The chairman reported that Mr R. W. Bond had been allowed to increase by £20 his tender for the Oaonui residence. It was found that he had made a bona fide mistake in the tender. The chairman had also authorised the architect to have the 1 Tongaporutu school planted at once. The mistress of Hui.rangi school had been granted leave to close her school for a week from next Thursday, the time to be deducted from the midwinter holidays. The re? port was adopted. . TEACHERS' MOVEMENTS. The chairman also reported the appointment of Miss E. Crawford as temporary mistress at Tata, Mr •W. J. Evans as headmaster at Inglewood, and Miss L. Finnerty as assistant- at Norfolk Road. He added that Mr L. Bieheno had been appointed temporarily at Mangapapa, tvndy 'Mr J. had taken his place *as temporary teacher at Whanganiomona. Miss Haddrell had resigned the position of assistant at the Omata school and Miss A. Crawford had been appointed temporarily in her place! On account of illness Miss I. Mace, of Fitzroy, and Miss E. Evans, of Central scho6l, both pupil teachers, had resigned, and Misses B. Morison and A. Noble received the respective appointments. ■ . • • TECHNICAL INSTRUCTION. The Board's Inspector.,- Mr W. A.I3al!antyne, submitted his monthly report on manual and technical'instruction. Grants amounting to '£4£ft 14s 3d had been received for this class of work from the Education Department. The Inspector recommended that the Board should revert to the system of itself administering funds devoted to agricultural instruction, instead of. handing over the Government grants to teachers. He i also recWmen4ecl that the applications j of various schtfols for presses* in which to keep* scientific apparatus shpuld receive favourable consideration. He pointed ■out that on/. all* Subs6riptions raised for the provisiotfbf' Scientific apparatus subsidies l^ere plaid not only by the Board, but, when the apparatus was used for technical purposes, hy the Educational Department also. Arrangements had been made to open several technical and ' continuation classes at the Central school on April 8. As soon the technical 1 Buildings at Stratford and New Plymouth were completed, further classes would be opened. School classes Were to be held at Stratford arid v> New Prymduth for the schools of each district. So far it had not been thought practicable to form classes in woodwork and cookery in connection with the Inglewood and Waitara* schools. *' 'However, he (the Inspector) had placed Under consideration of* the Education- Department a proposal to hold classes of one hour fifty minutes at New Plymouth for Inglewood and Waitara ohildren. He recommended'th© payment •of accounts amounting to £39 ss. The report was adopted. GENERAL. The secretary and Mr Kennedy presented their report on the needs of schools in the Ohura district. These schools having now been placed urder the control of the Auckland Education Board, it was decided to forward the report, with all other available information, ito that Board, and tofask for a refund of the expenses incurred by Messrs Kennedy and Whitcombe i* preparing the report. On the recommendation of the Finance Committee the tender of Mr T. Avery for printing the annual report was accepted. The Rahotu school committee was voted a subsidy of ' £3 on a similar amount raised by the committee for ;the purchase 61 science apparatus. t The Board then adjourned till this morning. VACANCIES. The following names were approved for submission to the school committees which' sffc-to select teachers for the vacancies named: —Ngaire, headmaster (salary £225), Messrs Penlington (Lepperton), H. A. Stratford (Marlborough), W. J. Boyce (Cfcato), D,. P. Evans (Inglewood), J. W. Thomas (Omata), H. Hockin (Auckland). Omata, assistani mistress:— Amy F. Crawford (Central) Jane Adamson (Inglewood), Annie E Hamerton (Salisbury Road). Okato assistant mistress : -*-Mary E.
