' ".' 3 The first case was that of John * rDoneti?, charged with- supplying liquor B to Hana Nipo on the 2nd instant. .Defendant had been previously cone victe^d _for' similar offences, ''and was' r fined' £9 and costs, or in default fourl" teen xlays' imprisonment. Hana Nipo * I waVsjimmoned for aiding and abetting t I lihfe offence. She had previously been :~: ~ I coijyicted, and' was now fined £1 and 6 I cost's, or. 48 hours' imprisonment in <le-> c fault. ; Two other native women, Te v Pohfe, Mo]diare' and Miri Herewiai, also y for complicity in Dfonetz's offence, were ■y ordered to pay costs only, 14s «ach. The evjclence of l r Constables Price, of Waitara, and Cul16 len was to the effect that Carlson had " been seen taking a bottle, of beer frojn "l the Waitara Hotel ,tfc>t» -two-roomed whaterv- He ifit^ whare with .• some -women. ' 'The policemen soon followed,. and, found Wilson and a °^ Maori woman drinking beer. Wilson I appealed to the constables not to bring Vs'V 5 ' a case against him* He repeated the request later in the day, saying he knew they could square it, and, if they B * would allow the ; matter to drop, he would not do it again. Mr. Townsend and Mr. Hatchen each contended that the offence ha,d not been proved against I his client. Defendant Carlson" denied " on oath that he had supplied liquor tc _ the native women.
