Hughes's first appearance struck terror to the prisoner. I Letters from Verischetti's brother have been conveyed to him. The diver encountered many" difficulties and ;had a couple of narrow escapes, losing the weights from his feet on two occasions, making it difficult to keep upright. At one point the pass is so narrow that Hughes 'has to wriggle through.
