r A Melbourne-Brindisi mail despatch of 20th February arrived in London on the night of the 22nd inst. " It's below the toridge that's above it." —a member of the Borough Council i at Monday's meeting. A petition is to be forwarded from ten hairdressers and tobacconists of. New Plymouth to the Minister for Labour re the hours of closing their respective establishments, and also asking that none of these shops be allowed to open on Sundays. The decision of the Government to establish a leper station on Kapiti Island is strongly resented by settlers at Paekakariki, Paraparerumu, and other places between Porirua-and Otaki, and steps are to be taken to, induce the authorities if possible to abandon the scheme. An Invercargill wire states: —Mr. McCarthy, S.M., when dealing with j cases of drunkenness at Waikiwi, where the depots are, said: "I will take this public opportunity of stating that the existence of the depots carrying on the class of trade they do, without practicj ally any regulations whatever, are a standing menace to the peace and order of this community." The Borough Council on Monday decided that the flag pole be taken from the top of the Tp^wn Hall and erected i over the portico- It was pointed out there was a great danger to anyone hoisting the flag to the pole in the present position. Mr. Collis said the last time the flag was hoisted the man cli/nbed half way up the pole and then "struck," the flag remaining at halfmast. The result was people wanted to know who was dead.
