THE POSIEDON SLUG.
Pr<ih life was infused into the field at Po.soidon goklnelds laat Saturday, when 31 r Charles Bravo, crying "Nugget, niioy!" tossed into the air a slug • the iiizo' of half a brick. The whole field quickly mustered to inspect the nugget, which weighs 1460z, and, in common with others, was found in pure clay 18 inches from the surface and 30 inches from bedrock, 3£ chains due sou tli of the "Poseidon Slug." Mr Patrick Leighton, of Nicholson Street, who returned from Western Australia three weeks ago, is a partner in the find. Bravo and his mate had been working the claim for three weeks, and had not seen a colour. The best claim on the rush is that of Smith, Stephenson, and Roger, in extent 63 feet by 63 feet. From this claim the following specimens and slugs have been unearthed: — 87ooz, 5020z, 3870z, 87oz, and 21oa, or an aggregate, in the rough, of 16720z. Last week these beautiful nuggets were reduced to bar gold, 290 ounces being lost in the process. With machine wastings and residues from slugs the total amount of gold won by this party is slightly over I4oooz, of the value of £5700. The lucky claimholders have declared a dividend of £1900 per man. — Argus.
