HTGH COMMISSIONER'S ADVICE

Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, March 25.

The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cable from the High Commissioner; dated London, 23rd instant: —

The mutton market is slightly weaker, with less demand. Supplies are increasing, but there is a scarcity of prime quality. Canterbury mutton is quoted at 4d per lb., North Island brands 3|d.

The lamb market is dull and stocks on hand heavy. The demand is expected to increase. The average price of Canterbury lamb is 5d per lb., other than Canterbury brand 4|d.

The beef market is dull and the supply exceeds the demand. The average price is 3fd and 2£d for hind and fore quarters respectively.

The butter, market is steady and prices are well maintained for choicest quality owing to short supply. The market is dull for second-class quality, as the supply exceeds tfche demand. Current quotations are: Choicest New Zealand lOls^ Argentine 100s, Victorian 09s, Danish Ills per cwt. The cheese market is quiet. Prices are slightly weaker, with less demand, at 65s per cwt. The hemp market is rather unsettled. Prices are slightly weaker. Good fair grade on spot is quoted at £37, AprilJune shipment £36, and fair current Manila on spot £39.

The cocksfoot seed market is firm, but buyers are not keen to do business. There is, however, no pressure to sell. The current quotation is 52s per cwt. of 17 lb., bright clean-dressed seed.

Current quotation for Bradford tops are — Thirty-sixes low urossbreds Is s£d, forties low crossbreds Is 6d, forty-fours medium crossbreds Is 6|d, fifties halfbreds Is lOJd, fifty-sixes quarter-breds 2s l£d, sixties merinos 2s 4£d.

The hop market is dull and likely to continue so, ' There is moderate demand for Califprnians r but stocks are fyeavy. The price in London is 60s per cwt. for English and 56s for Californians.
