RAILWAL APPEAL BORAD.

(Per Press- Association.) DUNEDIN, March 22. The of the. Railway Appeal Js©ftj?d£?tva(S continued, this," morning, when D. Wallace, goods agent at Dunedin, appealed against his position on the classification list. When the Midland Railway was taken over by the Government in 1895, Mr Wallace, who had acted as manager for- the company, wns appointed goods "agent at v Dunedin, which position Tie has since held. • The appeal was based on the ground that certain officials who had been below Wallace on the classification list were now in a grade above him, and that the Department had not kept a promise made to appellant that he would receive promotion "Vm equal terms with other members. The Department contended that every 'promise made had been kept, ■ and, though appellant had not been raised to a higher position, he had received an increase in salary. 1 The only witness called was Mr Grant, Traffic Superintendent at Dunedin, who said he could not speak too highly of the manner in which appellant did his work. At the same time, witness wou}4 Tecommend Mr- Armstrong, chief clerk in the traffic manager's office in Wellington, for promotion- in 'preference to appellant, owing to the former having a larger, experience. An appeal by Mr G. B. McHardy, machinist at Hillside; workshops, against his dismissal for drunkenness, was heard this afternoon, The '^offence, which was committed outside' of working hours, was admitted,, hut it was contended that the punishment was top severe, as the incident which led to appellant's dismissal constituted 'the only* lapse of the kind on his part. The manager and foremen testified that appellant was, punctual and attentive to his work, anp. they had never 'seen him showing any signs of drinking. > The Board reserved decision in each case.
