Mr Justice Cooper leaves New~ Plymouth to-night by the Takapima for Auckland.

It is almost certain that Mr R. W. Holmes, M. Inst. C.E., Superintending Engineer for the colony, will succeed the late Mr P. ,S. Hay as Engineer-in-Ghief . Mr Holmes was the first engineering cadet to join the Public Worlas Department, under Mr Carruthers, the Engineer-in-Chief, now Consulting Engineer for the New Zealand Government at Home.

Mr and Mrs Carter returned to New Plymouth from south by the mail train on Friday night.

The Professorship of Law at the Victoria. College, vacant by the resignation of Professor Salmond, has been offered by the Council of tjhe College to Professor MacLatirin, who has notified his acceptance. Professor MaqLjaurin resigned his present professorship of mathematics, but will be appointed Proffessor. of Astronomy, aiid will hold that office, together with that of head of the Faculty .of- LW, , assuming.' *tiis new duties at the- commencement of the second term of the present year.
