An Invercargill wire, says: — It is staged that cases of measles exist in 50 families, the children of which attend the South school, and that the school will probably be closed.
The Clutha Leader understands that Mr John Gibson, of Ashley Downs, has been formally advised that the Government have decided to acquire his estate for close settlement purposes. The price, it • is^aelieved, is (£4( £4 10s an aero. The area comprises approximately 3700 acres, Mr Gibson retaining the homostead block. ' '"' *

The maiden race is also well filled already. Large entries are guaranteed for the Highland events. The. track is now in good condition; it was, out and rolled yesterday. -

At a meeting of the Wellington and Wairarapa Charitable Aid. Board, Mr. Hogg, M.H.R., took exception to the increase in the cost of maintaining the Wellington, Receiving Home. Last year the amount was £2324, and this year ,the sum. required was £3500. He thought possibly it would be better if there Was no home at all. Some .members explained that the increased cost was owing to the increased number of children sent to the - Home, and the chairman said the State was giving a chance* ill ,Jjfe, to children, who. would not otherwise get one. Ultimately it was resolved that in the opinion of the Board it is desirable tha# increased care should be taken %o see that parents, guardians, relations are brought face to face with their natural obligations.
There , was a very large gathering at St. Joseph's schoolroom on Thursday evening, when the social under the auspices of the local branch of the Hibernian Society was held. The floor was good and an excellent supper was provided. Mrs. George .supplied music that was generally voted to be of the best. Mr. J. A. Clarke, who carried out the duties of secretary with a thoroughness deserving of much praise, also acted as M.C. During the evening ■songs wer© sung by Misses Foley and Adamson, and .Messrs. Cook and McLean, the accompaniments being played by Mrs. Gteorge and Miss Moore. Extras were played by Misses Mooro and Radford. The success of the social will no doubt stimulate 'he society to even greater effort j»o>t time. It was a most enjoyable affair, and all who had to do with the management — riot forgetting the ladies' committee — may well feel pleased.
