VOLUNTEERS.
(By "Scout.' 1 ') ' The Rifles, Guards, Inglewood Rifles, Waitara Rifles, and Battalion Band were inspected by Colonel Davies, C.8., at the Drill Hall last night. Colonel Davies was accompanied by Lieut.-Col. Bauchop, C.M.G., the officer commanding the district, Lieut. Chancy, A.D.C., and Major Hume. There were fine musters of the town companies , and band. The country corps^ musters were not. so good. After the inspection the companies were taken in succession,' and the various sections excercised by the section commanders. Addressing the parade at the conclusion, Colonel Davies said that he would not at present say' what he thought 6f them. ' A daylight parade would, be called at an ' early date, and he would then be able to see what they could do in the open. Private Marett (Taranaki Rifles) had. a narrow escape from a severe accident last night. One of the big doors of the Drill Hall blew: to and trapped his foot against the door sill, bruising it extensively. The injury was attended to by Surgeon-Capt. Home. ' ' Captain Okey appeared on parade as captain of th© Taranaki Riflest for the last time at the parade last night- His retirement leaves Corporal Armitage as senior member of the company, with Lieut. LeVer and Colour-Sergeant Lister close behind. • • ' The recent flood in the Waiwakaiho gobbled up some more of the Rewa Rewa range. Since the ' beginning of the year quite a large area has gone to the sea;. < ' * The Waitara Rifles held their annual meeting last Monday night. The Company is in an excellent financial position and is recruiting well. Mr' Wilkes was elected junior lieutenant of the Company.
