(From Our Own Correspondent.)
March 14.— The bush fires which have been raging round this district during the last woek have occasioned much anxiety and some loss to farmers. It i 3 reported that Mr. Valentine, on the iVlangawhtvro Road, was burnt out in Tuesday. A report that Mr. Bannister, of the Opna Road, had suffered similarly; happily appeals to be without foundation. On Wednesday the smoke in and around the town was most, disagreeable, and most people appeared to bo suffering from colds in the head.
On Wednesday a team of bowlers from Manaia played a, match on the local green, and, contrary to expectations, suffered defeat at the hands of the local men. Des Forges' rink beat Armitage's by .30 to 20, Dudley's men defeated Hill's by 39 to 23, while Clougn's boys were beaten by Lusher and Co. hy a few points. The afternoon tea was in charge of Mesdames Rogers, Morrison and Feaver.
I A movement is on foot to. resuscitate tho defunct mounted corps. It is to be hoped th?.t tlio. attempt will be successful, for there is plenty of material id and around tho, town.
