(From Our Own Correspondent.) January 10. — The monthly meeting of the Council was held last r/ght. Present—The Mayor, and Crs. McDonald, Tarplee, Brown, and Winfield. The Engineer was instructed to send notices to connect with tho sewer to the tenants of library Keserve. The oommitteo appointed to deal with tenders for Rata-street works reported that it had declined all tenders, aud bad authorised the Engineer to do the work by day labour. A requisition from the Tradesmen's Association 1 re early closing during the winter mouths, was cerwfied to as 1 representing a majority of the tradespeople of the town, and will be forw a rdcd to the Department of Labour as requested . . The reports of the Engineer and Sanitary Inspector were read and received'; Kesolved that the owner of the Silver Grid lie notified that if definite suyjs are not taken within 14 days to have the sanitary connection matie in accordance Wt'h notice sent, tho Council will take proceedings gafftsi him for a breach of the by-law. The Collector's return showed receipts £257 3s 4d. •Accounts paflsed for payment -were . General £115 3s 4)d, special loan £82 l«s 3d. The Engineer waß authorised to arrange witb Smart Bros, for extending the contract time for delivery of galvanised piping, angle afcd stop cocks, tor a further period or six months. The Engineer was given permission to take other work than that of the Borough on condition that he devotes such time to the Borough works as may he found needful from time to, time, his charges for time so devoted to Borough works to be at the rate of ; £1 per day, this arrangement to hold good until the expiration- of the original term otf his engagement.
