THE EXHIBITION.
(By Telegraph.— Special Service.) Christohurch, January IU. Over 22,000 people visited' th© Exhibition yesterday, the Besses' Band being the great attraction. The band played almost double the number of items promised in the programme, arnong-sfc the additions being such well known favourites as "Lead, Kindly, Light," "Lost Chord-," and "Ora> Pro Nobis," all of which were jjlayed with marvellous effect. A remarkable fea- | ture of the hand's playing is the all most entire absence of the usual brassy sound, the tone, as one critic j points out, resembling more that b{ an Immense or-iran, or very strong) concert orchestra than a brass band. fFh© same critic observes. •" Every instrument had it's.fuU value and was Eeartf. distinctly, yet none predominated, all helping, as it were, to swell iMe tout enaembfe. The crescendos of fch'e band were marvellous. The melody 01 the solo instruments was more like magnificent voices than instruments." The lavish illuminations prepared by Pain: and Sons, LondoT»> for th"c» rotunda and sports ground .were not lighted up, owing fo the threatening aspect of ( tUe weather. They swill be used, however, for future performances. This afternoon the ban<2 gave a recital in the concert* hall, which 1 was packed wffch" enthusiastic listeners.
