TARANAKI POULTRY SHOW.

A CREDITABLE EXHIBITION. The Tar&naki Poultry, Pigeon, and Canary Society's annual show was cm the whole a very creditable exhibition, and in 'many < respeofc an advance on past displays. Unfortunately, the date clashed -with that of the Wellington fixture, and the Society lost the entries of a number of prominent exhi^ bitors who would otherwise have patronised *h« Taranaki Show. Nevertheless thetfe were 520 •entries, approximately on -a par k withla«t year. In perfortning the opening ceremony in Fridiay afternoon, the ' Mayor (Mk , E. Dockrili), who is patron 4;o th« Society, , congratulated th-e Society of the good work, d<yne in improving the breed of poultry ' throughout the district, and < the advance made from year to year. Brown Leghorns were the best class in theStoow, the ' North Island chaanpionship attracting -good competition and a splendid lot of birds. A. Montgomerie, o| Paimerston 'North, won the Championship with -a '«fine pullet, and was firsit in cocks with last year's • winner -of the North Island Ohtajinipionship, also winning in cockerels. The same breeder was beaten in 'the hen class by McEwen Bros., of New Plymouth, with a very nice specimen. The game! classes were fairly represented. G. G." BouHon, of New Plyimoutih, was ] the mast succesjful exhibitor, and pen- '" ned a vary nice pile n«n, whioh secured x t-ho Society's sp»sial for the 'best game shown. W. Beals won in blaoio or brown l^ed games. Dorkings wore very «few in number, JP. Goodacre carrj'ing off the main prisfes. There was no competition m Cochins a»nd Brahnias and Faverolles. Fot;.sonio ufnaccoun'tiaWe reason, Orpingtons, botl> in buffs and blacks, usually a very good class, showed a great falling off. S. Teed's bird, 1 which won the North Islanld Cham- v pionship, last year, was . awardted first and special. This was the only t bird of any note in the class. F. Goodacre and - MoEwen Bros-, carried off a couple of prizes each. Plymouth Rocks, t barred,, were a good class. S. Oliver, q of Sentry Hill, secured the 'prrnoipal , prizes wi-th bii'ds of good' type, and TS. Surrey, of Ingiewaod, - won in Ply- c mouth Rocks of pther variety. Some birds of first-class quality were penned' , c in the Golden Wyaaaidotte classes, j. Captain Hood again won the special i honours for the best Wyando'tte shown s on this "occasion with a son of . "King Dick/ the. North Island Ch-ampionship y winner.' ']&, E. /F.ronxo'n't,, of^ ,. Haoyera, a «^ds first" in coQketel-s. "Silver Wyan- * v dot-ties were only a fair lot, Captain n Hood winning in cocks, hens, and pul- & lets. White Leghorns', although not j. numerically sti'ong, included some jbirds of good type bred fey 'E. T. c Bateman, ci -Hawera, and S. E. Corry, of Fitzroy. dMinorcas , \vexe not c very well represented nmni'^rically, j bait some of the finest specimens e^hi'bited in the colony .were shown by lirs Ml.M 1 . W- Burgetes, of New Plymouth. This lady secured the dis- r tinction of annexing the Society's p Champion Trophy . for the "best cock- ■ erel or pullet in the show thiS \rear. ; t The winning' bird, a cockerel, also g won for his 1 owner the trophy for. Uh.Gr best Minorca. ,Mvs .B.urgess, hay-; * ing been ,first last year, secured the i £5 5/ trophy outright. W'hiie Leg- t horns made a very pleasing display, the ' quality being good throughout. , G. E. J. Evans, of Hawera, carried off t/he hQnours. His winning pullet was a beautiful typical bird, adjudged both, the best Leghorn and t/ho T bfeat' pullet in the show, J. Tippins { secured tiyo prixes in Buff Leghorns. Spanish and Andaln'sians were moder- ' ato, and -there was littlo competition- l in Hamiburgs, G. G. Boulter, and F. < Goodacre 'being the most consistent t winners. Few bantama were shown, ./•as. Johnson won in- roseoomb, and < F. GoodsLcre in black or br.cnvn red«. * The North Island Championship in ' Rouen djipks attracted a splendid aa- t ray of these useful birds. 'G. R. : Croll. of^Waitar'a, trai ned tnie championship witih the same bird 'that won ( last ytfar., 3lrs C. L. Bridges, of Aramoho,* was ikvt. in TnfHan runners, and 'W. "•■s"•• Stnph'-'n'so'n'. of Mangorei. won for mother vnriety. The display of pigeons was nothing to wax enthusiastic about, exreept^ in one class.- 1 The judge spoke 'very hastily indeed 11 of the .Worifiing Hoinirrs. de- " claring iih-eut they were the finest loi exhibited- ion this coast for years. R. W. Dixon, of New Plymouth, a successful breeder, secured for the year the Society's £5 5/- trophy for the best "homer in the show, beating G. A. Corney and S. E. Pipe. A few nice Magpie pigeons were on view, T. W. Francis's (New Plymouth) exhibit being adjudged the best pigeon in the show. Other clashes - were poorly represented^ and 'Mr Johnson, the judg-3 recommends that -a greater effort should be mader to -enoourag-e this) feature of the show. There were not a great many canaries ex'hi'bitied, 'but those shown were on the whole pretty typical little birds. F. Goodacre wan to the fore as usual, and won the £5 5/- trophy for the best canary in the shov with a 'Norwich cock. Less thnn a dozsen cage 'birds came to hand. It.' Davidson's (NeV Plymouth) love birds were awarded .first and special. ; -' •• . • ' - A pair of Chinese pheasants, the property of Mr F. Goodacre, wore on exhibition, and' aroused' the admiration of all who saw them. The size of an ordinary pheasant, their plumace is of beautiful colouring, golden red^predominating. .Mr E. S. Allen had • an opossum on view, and qiuite an Australian exhibit was that of a young- Kangaroo and a pair of Kookaburras (laughing jackasses), beldng- ' ing to: Mr Ernest Sole. -: ' Mr, F:) Goodacre's trade display ,of poultry foods and requisites of \all descriptions, is " noteworthy. Mr « *D. Laing, 'successor "to Messrs G. Pott &

Co., had a taking exhibit of seeds of all kinds and poultry requisities. A close • inspection of the poultry pens leads one to the co»viction that many exhibitors know little about the art of preparing birds for the Show. 1 Some of the exhibits -were much bet low the standard in this direction, - their plumage being uneven and dirty, 3 but others- were all that could. be a desired, notably the winners in the ■ Brown Leghorn ojass.
