PROBABLEvS v. POSSIBLES.
The second trial match, which took the form of a Probables v. Possibles match, was flayed on the Racecourse on Thursday aftcrnooi*. Pratt aud A'Court (Hawera) could not get away for the match, and Swinburne is in Christchurch with the North Island ; team. The teams were: — j Probables (blue, and white) -.--Goal, B. McEwen ; backs, K. jJlcAllum (captain), Scon ; halves,, Day, H. McKwcn, Beal : forwards, Cathro, Marelt,, P. McEwew, Woodhouse, Welbaiu'. Possibles (yellow and black/:— Goal, Crawford ; backs, E., Avery, Curtis ; halves, Whvttakter, W. MoEwen,' P. Sergeant ; forwards, Hallett, E. Sargeant, Lints, Tribe, Perham (captain). Blue and Whites had secured a lead of two goals (3« — 1) at half-time, Woodhouse (2) and McEwen? and lints being the scorers, In the second half Perham beat McEwen, and- scored number two for Possibles, and the I same, player in trying to repeat the same effort shortly afterwards lost his stick. Numerous determined attacks by the. Blue and White vanguard were nullified by the sound defence offered by the opposing backs. Mr F. Robert rion was in charge of tlve game, an'c! gave general satisfaction. The work of; Marett and McEwon was not up to their usual high standard, although both were prominent at times for v good stick work. Cathro gave a better display on the left wing than on the previous Thursday. Welham (right wing) showing a fine turn of foot, but lost many good chances
by not centring' at the opportune moment. Beal and Day, right and Mt halves respectively, were the most proiminent of the back division, both playing "heady" games, never failing to return the ball, and keeping their forwards on the move. The former, who has played at centre -right through the season, gave a very gratifying display on the right wing. The defence of McASlum and Scon was as usual, sound, but Scon puts rather too much '^leather" into his driving, th« I'eli'ect generally being that the ball is | sent up to the opposing backs. McEwen had iio "hot'uns" to intercept but on one occasion, when bustler! , foolishly left the scramble to get back into his goal, the consequence being! that Perham had the ball into the net j before McEwen regained his position. As "bully" Lints got in some effective work, as also did Hi. Sargeant, while Hallett and Perhajn gave the bliie and white backs a deal of trouble. Whittaker (left half) was very safe, and used his stick with judgment, and Crawford (goal) also saved his ! sidp ou several occasions.
