A Model Farm.
PROPOSAL ADVOCATED BY CAPT. | < YOUNG. * i
Captain Young', Government Veterinary. Surgeon in this district, addressed a, gathering of farmers at Riverlea recently, "and advocated ihe establishment of a model farm, to bo r\m by the farmers ' in this district. Some such scheme he, considered necessary in order to maintain a, high standard in dairying. The idea the r Captain outj lined was to lease a farm with a purchasing clause, and run it as a comi pony, not primarily with the inteu- '; tion of securing big profits, but by 'experiment to ascertain the most mat-" able breed of cows 'for dairying — cftJi^r jbutter or cheese production — and the most certara and profitable method, of •prqviding winter feed for the herd, -livery thing about the farm 'would Wo .conducted on model lines. Caot tin Young said he considered Such a farm could be run cheaper by a company of farmers than by any GovernmeiW, as •fche Government was always looked Xipon as legitimate game for a "nibble" in buying and selling. He believed the successful inauguration of ■uoh a scT&eme would be of incalculable value to -dairymen, and would go a long way to diminishing ihe heavy losses experienced 15y mortality among cattle. The principal causes of the mortality amongst the -young stock were injudicious "feeding and Sack of shelter. These matters would be experimented with* on $he' model farm^ and remedies found. The idea has been endorsed by most of the leading farmers, and it is hoped that something ! tangible will result.
