July 29.— The old Masonic Hall was well filled on Thursday evening, Ihe occasion beang the fifteenth anniversarjof the openings of the Church of the Holy Trinity (Anglican). The Rev. Mr Watson, had secured several of the ancient inhabitants of Stratford whose reminiscences of the days of yore helped to while away a pleasnat social I hour. A number of songs and in- I sf rumen tal pieces were given, and a presentation was made by the Vicar, on behalf of the congregation-, to Miss Little, the organist. On the following night the same Hall was the scene* of a very spirited and entertaining debate between the &aponga and Stratford Debating Societies on the subject of "Conscription/ Excellent speeches were made on both, sides, Stratford being at the finish adjudged the honotir of victory by a few points. A large crowd witnessed the final game for the senior football championship on Thursday. The result was rather a surprise to the Stratford team and their friends, it beinglittle thought that Opunake would prove capable ot lowering their hitherto unbeaten colours. The Chairman (Mr Wade), Messrs Mackay and Monkhouse of the Education Board, with the Inspector and the Architect, met the School Committee on Friday morning, and talked over the restoration or re-building of the damaged class-rooms. It was decided to send a joint deputation to "WeSl/mgffion to confer wMi the Education Department, and endeavour to get »a substantial grant for re-building the centr«j and west wing of the school so as, to. give the much-needed separate accommodation for the secondary -classes and also a room for the uso of rthe staff. Mr M. T. West, for so many years manager of the Ngaire Dairy Factory, was entertained *by the shareholders and other residents on Tuesday evening, and was presented with a handsome gold watch chain with) a • suit-, able inscription. Mr West and family leave on Monday for their new home at Dalefield (Carterton). They carry with them the imaninious goodwill and esteem of . the district. . A' Ladies' Committee has commenced operations for holding a Hospital Ball at an early date.
