ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.-A REVIEW.
1, I. It is very gratifying to the devotees of the game t6 see ilie great strides it is already making in < this district. Last year onlyv, two clufjs^ .*J?ere com- [ peting for the cup, this year there are fiour strong teams in the field. Waitark carried off the trophy, ancLthcy musti be congratulated* , on j ft&eorT % success, j which was -.deserved,/, aa^a; better line of > forwards it would ,be difficult to find, Messrs Schofield and' Wilson being particularly brilliant. Last soa* son an Auckland team came dowta. " to visit us ; this year "We* Have already had a Wellington team, and it has been decided to Iscrid a representative team £0 visit Auckland, who wjfll also come down here again, in, a few weeks. Wellington also "will call <hero on their way up to Auckland, and play a' match. Dunedin will probably do the same. Thus in the second season of play we shall have five representative matches played, four being in' New Plymouth and one in Auckland. Surely on the face of 'this no one can say that the game is not catching on. On Thursday next /the WavfcaraWnien come in to the ' Recreabion Grounds to pit their ' strength! against . conofbined New Plymouth ; anyone wishing to see an exhibition of the forward game should not miss this chance. The proceeds willvgo to help' sending the reps, away" to. Auckland. The Waitara team will be entertained at a dinner and ''smoker" at- the /laranaki t Hotel, when Mr Julian will be asked to present them with the cup.
