Till? CONSUMPTIVE AiNINTCXU

(To tho Editor.)

Sir;— Tn reply to ' 'Subscriber's" letter, which appeared in your Saturday's issue, the (lovernmen't architect and o'Hicers of the 'Health Department viewed the site now occupied by thcnew nurses' home, and for various reasons decided that tho site was unsuitable. They also viewed several other sites, and the present one was considered .most suitable, but could not be obtained on account of it being occupied by the nurses. They ultimately fixed on a site in the grounds opposite* the tennis court, and submitted plans to the IRoarcl sho'winq- two shelters, each to acconiiiuo'date four patients, ami an administrative block with two bedrooms fo^ nurses, sittino'-rooni, kitchen, and open-air diuing'-rooim. Tt was at this juncture T returned from niv tour, anid suq<qested the Board should take the present site and pro\klo the nurses with new quarters, using- their cottage (which was )L>uilt three years aqx>) for the administrative block, which is not, as your correspondent says, a nmxkeshift, but is, v\ ith the slight alterations made, a fac siimile of the plan suljhnitted by the .Health Department. Dr. fValintinc and t^ie Board acted on my suggestion, stating- that the present site had many advantagx»s over the other one, and by using the nurses' cottage a now administrative blocflc need not be Ijjuilt^ but in lieu thereof a 'lew cottage for nurses on land recently acquired from the School Comimissionors. Persons with a knowledge of local conditions must admit that it requires something more than a mere shell to resist the Mountain blow and Sugarloaf wind; hence the two permanent erections, which aro considered sufficient for present use. Other shelters ! for one or two patients can he erect ed on the grounds when the occasion re.jiuires them. Your correspondent refers to the (Government subsidy. The Board have not yet received any portion of the subsidy. The Department ■ jiuery the claim, ami as the (matter is sub ji*dice T will not refer to it. T would remind ''Subscriber" that the <!\peii-e of connecting the Minexe with the borough drainaqo and making proper asphalt footpaths and furnishing- has to be added to the cost.*— T am, etc., Ct. TTSOTT.
