LICENSING EXPENSES.

To-day the Southland County sued the Win lon Borough for its share of the licensing expenses at the Awarua District, Mhich the defendant body refiißod to pay until the amount set forth in the certificate of the Chairman of the Licensing Committee for members' expenses in attending meetings was reduced to tho actual cost of travelling. Tt appeared that. a few years back the total expenses ran frjjuv {a pound \or two tp.nil. but 1 amounted to £24 this year. IWr Farmer, S.M. (who was at Winton on Court business, any, way) did not charge expenses, but Mr McCarthy. S.M. (as Chairman of the Committee) had received a guinea, several members one pound. and those living within three miles from Winton ten shillings per sitting.- Mr Cruickshanks, S.M. (Gore), was on the Bench. The Magistrate (Mr Riddel) being interested, he doubted whether he hod powpr to deal with a certificate made by a brother magistrate., and took time to consider the point.
