Borough Water Supply.
# ■ A SHORTAGE BEING EXPERIENCED. Tlie Borough Engineer reported to die Borough Council on Monday night that steps should be taken to curtail the present lavish use of the town water. The river, he said, was exceedingly low, and unless some ram occurred within the next few days ho would be obliged to cut off one of the pumps, as sufficient water would not be running down the race to drive the i wo turbines. He recommended that ike use of garden hoses should be immediately stopped, that the water should be cut off where there are leaky taps, and that flushing down should be reduced to a mimmium. rhe reservoir for the new scheme would be sufficiently completed for service during this week, and he would be able to get some water through from the intake on Thursday week (April 6th), so that any temporary inconvenience arising from the present shortness of water would be but of *kort duration. The ]jJngineer informed the Council that the new scheme would not largely augment the present seijvice for a while, because there would be considerable discolouration, and a good deal of soourino- out would be entailed. He thought, too, that the Fire Brigade should not use the water for purposes of practising until the existing shortage was overcome. The Council decided to give effect to •he Engineer's recommendations.
