Sir,— l believo it is the intention of our Council to saddle a new duty upon, the Engineer, namely, that of inspector of septic tanks, drainage, etc. I think the many duties now performed by the engineer quite enough for any one person to superintend. No tvonderthe ratepayers are everlastingly crying out about the state of the roads, footpaths, etc., when one man has to attend to the lot. One has only to walk up Gill street, for instance, and see what a stranger would imagine was a canal doing duty for a water channel. We have an inspector whose duty it is in most towns to attend to drainage, nuisances, etc., yet this duty is to be removed from the inspector. For what reason ? Incapability ? Surely not. The present gentleman is, I think, quite 'capable of performing that duty ; ho has done it satisfactorily for some time past, but, owing to his strict attention to his dsuty and impartiality, this work has been transferred to another, which I consider very unfair to both gentlemen.—l am, etc, RATEPAYER.
