Stratford News.

(Fa;om Our Resident Agent.) March 16.-lt is evident that "the ,**»* c* Kings" holds pride of jplace as the sport of Ihe democracy. Athletics, band contests, e nd the like are all very well, but they can't hold a candle to tne ra-ceeourse as a reliable draw, Stratford was decidedly en feto to-day, the street from an f-ariy how bearing unmistakable token that some great event was afoot. The Band contest yesterday *v&s rather a disappointment, there being only throe competing; bands--Elthan£ Kapouga, and our own. Waitara had e-ntereel but failed to appear. KajlOJ.lga won the prizes for agigfrogate points ar&bU£ih Stratford showed up better in the afternoon marching competition. The sound of '^independent firmg 1 ' from King Edward's Park showed itfeoe ihe memibers of the Gujn Club were enjoying themselves and entertaining their visitors: Here the "bookies'* mostly put in the off day, the band' contest's' small fields not affording much scope for the exercise of the "pencilling" art. > ' < To-day, school shorts have been the counter-attraction to the Races, but the attendance of the adult population did not suggest that the Racing Club's receipts would be materially affected. To-morrow, the Races are continued, and the Horticultural Society nolds its S"Kbw. On Saturday, the. week's pleasures conclude with the Military Tournament. This, has attracted a good deal of attention amongst outside corps and will be well worth seeing. Next week comes the reckoning when "th<? feast is o'er, Tho dreadful reckoning when men smile no more.'*
