The fir&t prosecution in Invercargill under the new Licensing Act, claxißc 12, which makes it au offence to be I on licensed premises after the ulosing houx*, took place to-day, when an eldi erly roan was charged with being on 1 hotel premises after the closing time. He admitted* the o (Fence, but explained -that he did not remain after ten o'clock for the purpose of obtaining drink, but in order to have a conversation with a friend whom he had ( not seen for some time, and who was ■> staying .in the hotel. The police said there was no evidence that drinking had been going on or/ wa^ about :to take place. Defendant was lined 10s and costs 7s.
