Stevens met alt Grylls' Hotel on Wednesday afternoon to make him a presentation of an adjdress and a purse of sovereigns, on the occasion of his retirement from the firm of Vickers ana Stevens. Mr B. >H. Nioholls (Mayor) occupied the chair, and Mr H. Brown the vioe^chair. Aftdr the toast of "The King" had been duly honored, the chairman, in makfag tho presentation to Mr Stevens, referred to the loss of Mr Stevens as a business man. 'He could assure Mr Stevens that he was held in the very highest esteem by all who had come in contact with him during his long connection in Inglewood, and could also asetare ..him that the kind remcbnfcfaaaijces of such would follow him. He wished him long life and prosperity. This, needless to say, was dromk with musical honors. The addreafs was as follows :— To Robert Stevens, 1873 to 1904,-« We, tike undersigned, representing a large number of your old frientis, on tjhe occasion of your retirement from the partnership wfth E. Vickers, Esq., beg, to epqxreas cfiax appreciation of your unvarying, ccutfrtesy and cowHalility, which for many years .have made oUr business associations so pleasant. We also desire to place on record our indebtedness for the lactive part you have played in the evolution of our thriving township, and our sincere wishes that you may long enjoy health, happinmess. and prosperity afcnong us.*— Signed, B. H. Nichollß (Mayor), A. Rae, A. Marsh, jnr., Jas. Kennedy, E. J. Morgan, John Hall, Newton King-, R. Findlay, H. B. Curtis, J. P. Clifford, and A. E. Atkinson. Mr Stevens, in responding, said that this was not the B©rt of talking that he lhajd beem used to. He could not expires* thanks that he shtfuld like to. He had been in the district for a long ifaue, and had always taken a keen interest in the welfare thereof. He hoped that the prosperous time would continue. He was very thankful for the kind expression of feeling shown him, and for the presentation. Mr Malone, of Stratford, said that he had been connected with the district for 18 or 19 years,' and had known Mr Stevens during that time, and he was extremely sorry that Mr Stevens was going out of business. Mr H. Brown proposed the dairying and grazing industry coupled with the names of Mr A. H. Thomson and Mr Clifford, who suitably responded. Mr Stevens proposed the health of Jus successor, Mr W. J. Matthews, to which Mr Matthews in a few well-chosen words responded. Mr W. Matthews proposed, "The Back Blocks," coupled with the name of Mr T. Chamney, which was responded to by that gentleman. Mr Stevens proposed the health of Mr G. W. Bennett, and toasts to "Tlie Ladies" and "The Press" brought a very enjoyable time to an ending. While driving from Inglewood to Tarata last night about 6 o'clock, Mr J. P. Clifford and Mr G. Aiken had the misfortune to capsize over the zig-zag near Grayling's tunnel, - the drop being nearly 20 feet. Fortunately, they escaped any serious injury, although they were considerably shaken. The night was very dark, and it is presumed that the lightning frightened the horse and made it swerve over the side. BOROUGH COUNCIL. The monthly meeting •of the Borough Council was held in the Borough Chambers on Wednesday,' when there were present :— Mis Worship the Mayor, and' Messrs G. W. Bennett, H. B. Curtis, A. C. Nicholls, H. Harding, H. W. Tarplee, andF. H. Brown. INWARD CORRESPONDENCE. From the Secretary* Veterans' Home, re admission of a , veteran from Inglewood. REQUESTS. Mr Pennington waited on the Council asking if the Council would put in a few loa<?s of earth on the footpath near his property, so that he could protect the foundation of his build- * m Left in the hands of the Works Comtmittee. | KELLY STREET. The Works Committee reported on the petition boforo the last meeting of the Council from Messrs Wlntehead, Haworth, and others re metalling m Kelly street. They would not recommend that the work be done, a« it would cost more than the Council could lay out at present. The petition from the ratepayers of Kelly street wan left' in the hands of the Works Committee to report on.

LIBRARY. Cr. Brown was appointed as the Council's representative on the Library Committee. The following were confirmed as members of the Library Committee :—: — Messrs Tarplee, Harding, Trimble, and Ingpen. GRANTED. Mr J. Pennington was .granted permission to put parapet on his building in Kelly street. < COMMITTEES. The Loans Committee arranged • to meet on Monday evening, and the Finance Committee on Wednesday. RATE. Councillor Brown gave notice- to move a,t the next monthly meeting of the Council that a general rate of lid be struck over the whole of the borough. EXCHANGE. Councillor Curtis gave notice to move at the next meeting of the Council, to be held on Wednesday, July 6th, That a certain area of the Recreation Reserve known as Giles' paddock, be exchanged for an equal area of Borough endowments situated on the west side of Elliot-street between Chrrington-streei and Humphriesstreet. The Collector's statement was read. ' Accounts amounting to £130 6/9 were passed for payment.
