VOLUNTEERS.
The TSltham Argus says :— Much disappointment will be felt by volunteers by the intelligence received this afternoon that the Easter encampment, arranged for Inglewiood, has been abandoned. It i* nothing short of scandalous the treatment tK. 'Volunteers are receiving tv&m the Defence Department, and tto shall have something to say onthia matter very Shortly. Owing to its excessive corrosive nature, cordite is severe in its effects upon rifle barrels, and when constant and thorough cleaning is not siven, the result is ruinous. The Oefeuce Department is (says the Wellington Times) alive to this fact, ard steps are being taken to bring thp matter prominently under the notice of negligent volunteers. In the district orders issued yesterday by the district adjul tent there is jpubjished the following extract from a report by the armourersergeant :—": — " Several companies' arms are in a very bad condition, and unless more care is paid between now and the next inspection, they will have ( some very heavy bills for damages to face for neglecting these arms."
