Savieri Dramatic Company.
! "A BROTHER'S CRIME." ! ) In the Theatre Royal on Tuesday evening the Savieri Dramatic Com- ( pany successfully jened a three j nights' season, when the (.'.elodrama, "A Brother's Crime," was produced. The play is on ordinary Jines, brimful of exciting situations, and it was well mounted and smoothly played. Mr Savieri impersonated Lazarus, a Hebrew money-lender and generally shady character, who withal has dome redeeming points, notably his sunso of unctuous humour. The audience keenly appreciated this character, which was played in a manner that stamped . Mr Savieri as an actor much above I Iho ordinary. The part is an exacting one. Miss Betterton-Glover was Naomi, the heroine, and in the second act, where she alternately !:ajoles and defies her stubborn uncle, she was ex- j cellent. In the emotional pce&ages she was also very good. Mr Basil Loon was a popular, hero, who acted very . naturally, and shared in the honours } •f the evening. As the villain, Jack Glyndon, Mr Paul Clifford''was fair, and repeatedly evoked hostile demonstrations from the audience. A very even reading of the part rfjpt^e stubborn father, who is prepared to cast \ off his wife because of her rhampion- j ship of her son, was given ivy Mr J. Martin, and as the boy, ragged, j but full of gratitude to the hero, who had befriended her, Miss Ef,riel Gibson \ was a prime favourite. The other' parts were well filled, and ihe j.crform- j ancc was on • the whole a v^ry smooth one.
