It will he remembered that in iho spring of last year Mr G. Fair revisited Taranaki for the purpose of inspecting properties and acquiring rights to bore on land that showed cr was near indications of petroleum. He secured a number of rights and then left for Adelaide to consult his ~>rincipals with regard to purchasing a plant to bore for petrelcum in this district. Word was just received recently, that Mr Fair was yetting along witn hirf work, and ihat ho expected to ship a boring plant from Sydney this month. The letter also stated that Mr Fair would be over to personally superintend the erection of the plant and the boring operations. Mr Fair took away with him some samples of petroleum that had been obtained from the old bores at Moturoa. To show the quality of "this oil Mr E. M. Smith, M.11.E., forwarded a similar sample to Wellington, and Mr J. S. Maclaurin, the Government analyst, forwarded his report to Mr Smith the other day. Tho analysis ihowed :—: — Water 2.7. Petroleum spirit distilling below 100 deg., 14.0. Kerosene or burning oil distilling between 150 and 300 deg. 39.0. Lubricating oils 20.5. Paraffin 14.5. Coke 5.3. Loss 4.0. <, Total 100. Mr Maflaurin, in a footnoto, described the oil as valuable, seeing that the sample yielded such an excellent l>ercentage of burning and lubricating material. * Mr Smith has posted a copy of ihc analysis to Mr Fair.
