The Abattoirs.
COMMITTEE'S REPORT.
The Committee appointed to report on the Abattoir staft" reported to the Council on Monday evening : — That the Government be requested to appoint a Government vet. s Inspector and manager (as at Napier), at a salary of £40 with house ; that there be a head slaughterman at £3 with house, or house allowance of 10s a week ; second slaughterman £2 10s with house, or 10s house allowance ; and third man £2 5s a week ; that the Council be strongly reckmmended Lo erect houses for the Inspector and manager (say £350), and foi*- the head und second slaughterman .(£225 to £250 each); and to borrow the necessary amounts on the best icims from the Government if possible.
Mr Bellringer explained the lcport," and said that in o^er to I'avry out Ihe arrangements properly it would require another £1000. The need of this money was specified in the report. He thought the Council could obtain the money in the open market if locossary at 4-J- per cent. Mr Brooking said that tho building of the houses was necessary. It would pay the Council in the long run to raise the money to build these houses. The Mayor and Mr Carter also spoke. The report was then adopted, the raising of tho money to be referred to i he FFi a nce Committee. It was decided to call for tenders for yards and race at abattoirs, the ts to be totara and rails red pine.
The questions of framing conditions for the abattoirs staff was referred to l he: Works Committee.
