Advance New Plymouth. NEW BLOCK IN DEVON-STREET.

A fine block of buildings situated in Dovon-street on the soutn side, between Currie and Liardet-streets, is no-v obout completed and fills up a big gap that was for many years a veritable blot to the vision. The block has been erected for several proprietors, namely Messrs Bewley and Griffiths, whose portion has cost £1233 : Air W . Dingle, whose share is £435 ; Mr Grayson, whose contribution is £('Ai>; ami. Mr W. Courtney had advanced Mie archtiectural features of the town to the extent of £481. The town to the extent of £481- 'Jho block' is enclosed in a brick wall en each side, with party brick divisions between egch proprietary, and has a wooden sanded front designed on the Italian principle. The portion of the blocflc. erected for Messrs Bewley and Griffiths is divided into offices (downstairs and upstairs), a spacious auctiom mart, aad a shop. The mart ii 31ft. wide by 65ft 6in. long, with ' a 12ft. stud, anid is lighted by a wire glass skylight^ 60ft. long by fcft. wide. The front of the ground floor is devoted to two private oifijces about 13 ft. x lilt, and 12ft. x lift, respectively, and on the other side of an entrance passage, which is Bft. wicle, is a shop 33ft. x 12ft. The front portion is furnished in match lined rimu. A spacious stairway leads to tho ucper floor, which is divided into tliree offices in front having areas of 1 tit. 6in. x lift., 13ft. x lift., amd 17ft. x 9ft. respectively ; and at the vca«r ot and 17ft. x 15ft. 6in. Three of the these are two offices 14ft. x iUH., .offices are Vauri lined and varnished, aad two papered. All the offices hiwe tneusual fittings. The lower suite will be vied by Mr Bewley and tl 0 uj.per suite by Mr Griffiifchs. The stair well and .lobbies are lighted by skylights. The whole building has a depth of 91 feet. portion, on the ground floor is devoted to a shop, 6'Jft. x '£1 ft., match lined and fitted ; and a stairway leads to the upper storey, which is divided inito four rooms. Mr W. Dingle has a roomy «hon en the ground floor, 17ft. x 60ft., and tKe upstairs is divided into livivg room*. •■ Ms Courtney's shop is 12ft. x -I*ft., and the upstairs part has not ypt beem divided. All the shops are well fitted, und have plate windows. Mtf J. Safcdersom was the architect for the. whole block, and he has < s u- - ried out his duries with characteristic ability and . thoroughness. Messrs j Boon Bros, were the contactors tor ■ Messrs.. .Bewley ated Griffiths' and Mr Courtney's part,, and they also dv\ their own painting .and plumbing, and brick work, the last named work ».eing carried out under Mr .Evans' supvision. Mr Ting was the contractor ior Mr Dingle's and- Mr Grayson's parts, and the sub-contractors were Hellringer's ©state (painting, etc.), Messrs Smart Bros, (plumbing), and Air Madder (brick work). All the work has been executed ia:.thfully and well liniahed.
