The death •is announced of , Major Pond, the famous Anierican lecture agent. Major Pond, was ,born in New York State in 1838. He started; life as a compositor, and. afterwards owned and crdited a weekly papei 1 in "Wisconsin till 1 the outbreak of ' the War .of Rebellion I in 18(51 when he .'joined a cavalry regiment and finished up 4 years' service ! with the rank of major. After the war he went west and followed mercantile pursuits till 1873, when he went to New York, and has boon managing and exploiting celebrities evei* since. He travelled over 300,0 ( 00 miles with Henry Ward Beechcr, and has also managed H. M. , Stanley, Matthew Arnold, Sir Edwin Arnold, lan Maclarcn, Anthony Hope, Conan Doyle and other famous people. He was the owner and 1 manager of the American Lecture . Bureau.
