Th« Board met on Wednesday. Pre- • sent : Mr Allswbrth. (Chairman), Mrs Dtyughei'ty, Messrs McDonald, Wade, Mackay, Taylor, Faxill, and Morton. THE ARCHITECT'S REPORT. The Architect reported the Kahui contract would be completed this week. The painting at Awatuna was finished." -The 'lechuieal School at Stratford would be started on Saturday. .Leaks at Tariki wotald be attended to at once. The Kaimata Committee had attended to the tank stand. With regard to the chimney and stove pipe at Whangamomona the chimney top Jiad been sent from Stratford, lie suggested, the stove pipe should be attended to by some one on the spot. — H was decided that the Kahui Commietee be called upon to carry out their promise to deal- up the school gunmds as the Architect reports the 1 school cannot be opened until this is done. Lincoln Road : Owing to Mr Baird being anxious to leave the district, and his resignation not taking effect until the 20th inst., I granted leave for Mr ' Heenan to take his place from the Ist till the 20th inst.— Owing to several schools having been closed through epidemics, previous to the holidays, and some of the Committees and teachers being anxious to resume work before the time advertised by the v Board, 1 confirmed the action the fol- .- lowing committees' had taken :—lnglewood, Tariki, New Plymouth and Miidhirst. There were six tenders rejceived for >the Raupeka school contract, and that of. Mr N. J. King, of , Stratford for £291, was accepted. Mr \ King . has signed* the agreement, and will proceed with the work at once. The Chairman then stated what steps ' he had taken to establish technical plumbing classes here and at Stratford. On the 17th inst. he received a wire from the Department stating that the , sum of £1084 11/ had been passed for the Stratford Technical School, and he immediately instructed the architect to accept Mr G. Kay's tender, and the contract has been signed. Stratford District High School. — .AVhen at Stratford the Chairman was ." waited upon by a deputation from the w/feigtrict w /feigtrict High School Committee, who vjYated that Messrs Faull and Wade visited, the school, and had a"uth- - efrised subject to approval, an expenditure of about £2 to remedy defective » drainage- The deputation also asked - , for a, partition in the large class room. The Inspector did not recommend this partition. The report was adopted, with thanks .* to the Chairman for his action in connection with the plumbing classes. It was resolved that the Board ten*- * ders to Mr Smart its cordial appreciation of his pub ie spirit and generosity in the assistance he has given the TBdard in establishing technical classes in plumbing, both at New Plymouth arid Stratford, by placing his workshops in. these places and his own skill at the disposal of the Board for that purpose. It was also resolved to place on record the board's appreciation of the Inspector's services in connection with ; the opening of the plumbing classes. RUAPEKA SCHOOL. The Architect submitted a letter from Mr N. J. King stating that he had made a mistake of £20 in adding up the figures for his tender for the - Ruapeka School and he' asked if the Board would allow say £15 extra on th« contract. At the same time he was prepared to carry out the contract at his original estimate. The Architect stated he had satisfied himself that Mr King's statement was sorrect and he recommended the re- • quest' be granted and a iresh contract signed. The tenders were as follows: —King £291, J. W. Brown, jun. £329, Melville and Miscall £334, Kay £335, Graig £357, Jrvine and Henry £368.— Jt Was moved by Mr Morton and seconded by Mr Adlam, that the contractor b«i allowed to amend the contract by, adding £15 to the price. An amendment was moved by Mr i v Mackay, and seconded by iMrs Dougherty to authorise £20 to be added to the contract. On a division the amendment was carried by 5 to 4, Messrs Adlam, McDonald, Morton and Allsworth voting with the noes. INGLEWOOD. The action of the Chairman and Mr • Morton in having the chimney at .In-gle-wood attended to at a cost of £1 JO/ was confirmed. MIMI. The tender of D. Fraser of £5 10/ p#r annum for a lease of seven years for section 7, block VII., Mimi, was accepted. CARDIFF. The Salisbury Road Committee -wrote relative to the unsatisfactory reports on the school, and ask no- th»> Board to take action. — Referred to the Chairman. NCARIKT. Mrs Dougherty and Mr Adlam reported having visited Ngariki school, and after going- into matters with the. Committee, a satisfactory result ensued, ami the Committee had passed a resolution to that effect. — Adopted with thanks. — Mr Adlam was authorised to supply a stove pipe for Ngariki school. j t KAHUI. i The Kahili Committee wrote stating that, in consequence ot' lia\ ing ieceived peremptory notice to quit the present school premises, the school had j been closed till the new building was ' erected, and the furniture had been stored. TUTUTAWA. Tho Tntutawa Com mil too notified that owing to the roads being blocked they had closed the school. — Confirmed. MORTG AGE CONSENTS . At the request of the Board's solicitors, the Chairman was authorised to sign consents to mortgages. QADET BATTALION. Mr H. Dempsey, headmaster of the Central School, wrote stating that at a meeting of headmasters and officers of cadet companies, it was decided to form a battalion of public school c - adets for Taranaki, and it was suggestj ed it should be known as tho Tarana;ki School Cadet Battalion, the uniform to be the same as that worn by the Central Cadets, parades to be held as may be arranged. Tho probable strength would be : — Central. 2 Companies ; Stratford and Nq-aire. 12; luglewood, 1 ; "Waitara 1 . The fo - lowing officers won; recommended :—: — Major. ]1. Dempsey ; Adjutant. J. Willie Okey. — The recommendations wcrti adopted and a* copy <>f the letter is to be sent to the Department. BANKING CHARGES. The Nelson Board wrote asking for co-operation in the direction of securing relief from tho banking charge made for keeping Committees' accounts. — The Board endorsed the action taken. WEST END PARK, The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote, stating a clause had been drafted in a Reserves Empowering and Exi change Bill to give effect to the exchange of St. Michael's Square for the West End Park. SPOTSWOOD. The Lands Department wrote, stating that the Board's request for the reservation of a school site in the Spotswood Settlement at Moturoa had been referred to the Commissioner of Crown Lands to give ell'tct to, unless there were good reasons to the contrary. The! Education Department wrote, • relative to non-payment of 7/ by a teacher in respect of a ticket granted for attending training classes, but not used for that purpose. — T i was resolved that the Board regrets the teacher has abused the privilege iiclcct as reported to the Board,, and that unless the amount is refunded immediately the Board will recommend the Department to withdraw the privileges. REPORTS ON SCHOOL SITES. The Secretary of Education wrote, in reply to the Board's protest against its inspector having to report on new school sites in bade blocks, as the citviimstanees could be much better investigated by two members of the Board, stating that the Minister considered he should have the .Inspector's report on each case. — It was decided to inform tho Department that the Board adhered to its former communication, but had no objection to the Department sending an officer at the Department's expense to report on such cases. - ■■ TJKOBANGI. Mr Faull submitted accounts of £3 18/ and £3 10/ for posts and rails supplied at Tikorangi school, and recommended payment. — Adopted. PUPIL TEACHERS' EXAMINATIONS. The Inspector submitted regulations for the examination of pupil teachers, amended in accordance with the Board's resolution. — Approved, and ordered to be forwarded to the Minister for his approval. A CONTRACT. Mr Turner, with his solicitor Mr Kerr, waited on the Board relative to a compromise in connection with the Board's claim consequent on Mr Turner having thrown up the contract for the Ruapuha school. Mr Govett, the Board's solicitor, was also present. Mr Kerr pointed out extenuating circumstances as regards wer.ther and difficulty of carting timber, ft was decided to leave the mc+tpr in th«- Chairman's hands with authority lc consult the Board's solicitors. OPUNAKE. The head teacher at Opunake, wrote asliing for repairs fo his residence.—

The architect was instructed to have the repairs executed. KINA ROAD. Mrs Dougherty and Mr Adlam reported having visited Kina Road and inspected the site for a school mentioned in the settlers' petition. They also visited other places further up which might be suitable for a school site. They reported their inability at present to recommend the site named in the petition, but should the settlers put up a suitable building they recommended the Board to lease it for a time and provide a teacher and all | requisites for a school.— The report J was adopt?d. RESERVES' COMMITTEE. The Reserves Committee reported on \ the present position of the Board's re- | serves.' with suggestions for dealing 1 ' with same. It was resolved that the report be adopted, and that the arrangements for surveying the school -iites at Stratford be left to the Committee ; that their recommendation for the deviation of the Hill Road through the Albert Road school site be agreed to and forwarded to the solicitors for the Waiwakaiho Road Board ; that Mr T. Harry l'enn be tho Board's agent for leasing, superintending, and collecting rents on certain sections at Stratford, and that he lie paid the usual commission for collect, ing rents. WKST END SCHOOL. The Inspector's recommendation regarding a probationer at the West End schoo 1 is to be given effect to, and Wfiss Nixon is to !»<• transferred from the Central to the West Knd r.chool.
