SUEVTVOJIS OF A WRECK. LEAKY VESSELS. United Press Association.— By Electric Telegraph.— Copyright. Norfolk Island, Juno 22. . Tho Titus' arrived last night, bring- 1 ing Captain Overtel and seven of the crew of the Edith, recently wrecked at Noumea. Twelve days after leaving the wreck they landed at Montgomery Island. Among the passengers by the Titus are six of the crew of the Wanhoe, which had been condemned. The captain remained behind, and the mate is in hospital at Viia. Sydney, June 22, The discharging of the Essex is proceeding preparatory to docking. Probably her frozen meat will require to be landed. A quantity of cargo,principally grain in No. 5 hatch, is reported damaged by water. It has been ascertained that the leakage was caused by her rivets at the bend of the bilge having started, but the full extent of the damage will not be known till the vessel •is docked. The agents claim the leak is no more than what is common in new vessels, and that she could have made the voyage to South Africa with perfect safety. The leak was first, noticed while the Essex was voyaging from Wellington. :'*••' Private messages received at Sydney confirm the arrival of the Edith's missing- boat's crew at Norfolk Island, and add details to the effect that they suffered great privations before being landed on the island from which the Titus rescuetl them. She left Newcastle for Honolulu on June 9th and encountered a heavy gale on the 19th. The vessel was badly strained and leaking at the rate of twelve inches an hour. Tho steam pumps had been working for the past eight days.
