Tie J carters of tihe iron, electric, cotton and wool indii'S'trie.s hope to delay the realisation of Mr Chamiberlain's policy, and are striving to return non protectionist candidates. There will be 180 second b,allots corr^pared with 98 in the election of 1898. The Social Democrats secure 55 seats at the first ballots compared with 32 in '180 S. This Success is at tjhe expense of the Radicals., and is attributed to ' the tariff isstie and Kaiser's interference with parties. The Freisinnigo, or Radical Party, is almost annihilated. Saxony voted solidily for Radicals. This is; attributed, to the effects of the Jipyal scaridal. The Socialist vote at Essen was 22,000 compared with 4400 at last election ; Dtrisboiry 2500 compared with 7SOO ; Coohum 40,000 compared with 22,000. The Socialist vote jn IJerlin was 100,000 afooVe the vote of 1898 and tliat in Saxony 100,000 aboive all the other parties. It is considered that many thousand voters wiko are not Socialists supported the Socialises as raproscntwig the Etnc. pire's ono ell'cctivc pai-ty of opposition. The results, as far as the first ballots show, are:— -Centre Party SS ; Social Democrats 54 : Conservatives 31 ; Poles H. The other parties are ■smaller.
