PLYMOUTH BITJIiDINGS. The latest architectural addition to the town is* the Plymouth block of buildings in Devon-street, near the Bank of Australasia, wliioh has been etectoH to the order of Mrs E. Douglas. The block is dfvided into •fchree shops on tho ground floor, anid a suite of cifßcee and living rooms upstairs. Tfee first shoj) on the lower floor, occttpied by Mr E. Jeffrie^, is about S2 x 15 feet, with a 15 feet staid, an,d is partitioned, the larger part being used as luncheon and tea rooms. At -the back is a roomy kitchen,, and a stairway leads to three commodious living • rooms on the t'Qp floor. At the baok of the shop is a substantial ojven ancl bakeh.of.se. built with lirioks. The shop -wind owe have bean built on the latest -principle, and the panes; are ' British plate glass. The central I shop, now temporarily occupied by Messrs W. Moi*ey and Son, is 47 x 15 .feet, with al3 stiyl ; and the thii&l shop, also occupied by the same firm... is the same size wit,h the exception of a portion reser-veel for a stairway to the offices on tlie top floor. This staii*way frora Devon-street leads to a suite of offices now occupied by Mesca-s Kelsey aad Lennon, and. Mo: F. W. Ukshmtond. Eaoh office is about 35 x 14 feet . with a 12 foot stuH. The first elevation presents a substantial appearance, being about 50 feet frontage with a height of 40 feet, and. is divided into three bays. The . s*j^e or party walls are of brick, and tihe front pilasters axe finished in plaster, tJrencKed in imitation of stone block's. The two " centre ' pilasters corresjpoml, all haVing heapry capitals car\~ed in high relief, anjd above the main conice are set bafp'k to receive heaA*y canved trusses. Tile* -wjbole is snrmodmted with- a fine parapet, having a handsome pediment in the centre. Two winnows are-fixed to each &ay^ admitting light to, the upstairs! offices* arid rooms, arid on each side are pilasters parrying lia^ajcisome pediments, \wliich give a &ie effect to the front- The sanitary arrangements are also on a gooidanS. Tjjp-tp.-date scale, the ventilation, 'drainage, aud latrines " being of the latest system.. The drains are connected, with the main «ewer, and hiave akio. been fijxed to connect wi^. the new~ drainage system wfoen.. it is,--.in-stalled. Mr J. Sanilerson "was the architect, for " the work, and he has certainly added an architectural feature to tine town. Mr J. W. Tong, the contracior> Las done- Ids work well. The whole of tihe carp entering and brickwork ■was under' his .personal supervision. Messrs H. Brow.Ti and Co supplied the joinery ami timber. Mr F. Griffiths exee'uted the plumbing, awd Bellinger's estate the painting. Every effort was msade by Mr Tong to carry out his contract faithfiuJly and to the satisfaction of the- architect.
