County Traffic Bye-laws.

CONFIRMATION POSTPONED. A special 1 - meeting of the County Cofuncil was held tit 2 p.m. on Monday to consider the confirmation of the proposed new traffic by-laws. Mr Malone waited on tho Council on behalf of a niuni'bor of carters, who he s>aftl had been unaware till the last moment of w^at, had been happening in regard to tiie 'by-law^. He tfid not clai,m that the men sihoukl cheapo payment of a fair charge. The difficultywas that the charges projpos'ed would hit" hazelly some of the cax'riers. He ("Mr Malone) would ask the Council to adjourn tho matter for a time to enable a conference between tiie Council and those interested, to see what amicable arrangements coulil be mafle. Other- local bodies had bye - laws, and while tho by-laws were in hand they. might be framed with some. degree, of unity, , t .'J^he Chairman adinitied that the proposed charge o£ £40 a year was certainly going- to. strike at people whom it was never' intended to toubh., Under the circiimstances he thought the confirmation, of. the by-laws might be postponed till next meeting 1 . wShen the whole matter could be gone into fully and a more workable by-law dvolvecj. H9 lapved., that the matter be deferred, and that a committee consisting of Messrs Gray, Brown, and the Chairman be -.-^et .up to go fully into the matter. Mr Gray mentioned that it was never intended to press haiidly on carriers. It had been saigges'tecl that a special fee should be paid on any occasion when carriers ' had to go into the country. Mr Ancfrews seconded the .motion, which was, after - some little, 1 dwciiission, carried.
