ELTHAM,
(From Our Own Correspondent. ) The largest and most successful pic--nic ever held here was the one given
by the employees of the Eltham Cooperative Dairy Company on Thursday last. From early morning vehicles of all descriptions might be. seen wending their way towards Ta/umata Park, and long before the proceedings commenced a great number were on the grounds. Every, conveyance carried an abundance of refreshments for the picnic. Tho admission was free; the races were numerous and of every description; the weather was fine and not a hitch marred the enjoyment of the day. The directors and secretary of the company were kept hard at work all the time, for no sooner was one race over than the bell summoned those entered for the succeeding one. In the evening a concert was held at the Athenaeum, which was crowded to excess, and a most enjoyable dance followed. Everyone pxpressed the opinion that the picnic was the best ever held here, and are in hopes that it. will be an annual event. A meeting of tho executive committee of the New Zealand Axemen's Association was held on Thursday. Evidence in the dispute over the chopping competition held at "the Okato Hibernian Sports on the ITuh March was heard. In this case several of the competitors were started before ihe proper time. The executive committee decided that the contest should be chopped over again at New Plymouth within one month from date, the Okato Club to make all arrangements in connection with the same, and to pay the travelling- expenses of competitors to New Plymouth. Two members of the executive committee ' of the New Zealand Axemen's Association will attend to take control of the competition in order to prevent further bunglinjr. The coming election of Mayor and Councillors for o\ir borough is caiisinrr some excitement. Our popular Mayor (G. W. Tayler. Esq.) will again stand, and I imagine has nothing to fear. We have had a large majority of first rate Councillors, and I expect to see tho most of them in their old places. Weddings are the order of the day in Eltham. To-morrow (Wednesday) Mr Brewster is to be married to Mi?s Scott, daughter of Mr and Mrs Scott, two of our most popular townspeople. Particulars of the wedding I will forward 'next week.
