Railway Fatality at Moturoa.

MAN KILLED ON PORT LINE. The express train on returning from the breakwater about 10 o'clock on Monday night ran over and killed Mr Archie McGiven, an employee of the Harbour Board. The tram was going along at a slow speed when a man was observed on tho track opposite the Breakwater Hotel. It is presumed that the man, who afterwards proved to be Mr McGiven, attempted to board the train in order to come into town, and in uttcinpting to do so he got swung under the carriages, which ran over him and mangled him in a terrible manner. The train was pulled up when it was noticed that something had happened and the officials made a search, resulting in the finding of Mr McOiven's body. The police were notified of the fatality, and they sent out a vehicle to bring in the remains. The deceased was well known in New Plymouth. He was a native of Scotland, and first came to New Plymouth to work as a dher when the breakwater was started in the early "eighties." Ever since then he has resided here, if short periods of work in other places are excepted. When tho Tasmania was wrecked on the East Coast the deceased was engaged to recover the mails, a difficult task which he executed well. For some time past he was engaged by the Harbour Board for diving work required at the wharf, and also in otner capacities. He was about 50 years of age Deceased leaves a wife and se\eral children. Constable Mcßac, who was on the train, at once took steps to collect the remains of deceased. The body was dismembered. Owing to the Coroner, Mr R. L. Stanford, being engaged at Stratford to-day, and at Inglewood to-mor-row the inquest will not be hold tillj 11 am. on Thursday.
