Per Press Association. FIRE AT AUCKLAND. Auckland, May 2. A fire occurred at Kingsland this afternoon, completely destroying a, six-roomed house owned and occupy ied by Mr Math,ew Herd. The building was insured in the Royal for ££00 and the furniture and effects; in the Norwich Union for £200. About £100 worth of furniture was saved . • A SCHOLASTIC APPOINTMENT. Westport, May 2. The Committee of the Westport High School decided to-night to recommend the appointment of Mr Arthur John 'Clifford, of Bullfl School, for the teacher of secondary i-^bjects at the Westport HighSchool. A CO-OPERATIVE BAKERY AND FLOUR MILL. Christchurch, May 2. The Canterbury Trades and Labour Council has decided to take immediate steps to establish, a co-oper-ative bakery and flour mill in Christ church in connection with the Working Men's Co-operative Society. Sometime ago it was decided to start a .co-oper«,tive butchery, butj this project will probably be held over for a time pending the carrying out of the latest scheme. DINNER TO RETIRING MAYOR. The City Councillors: this evening tendered a dinner to Mr A. E. G. Rhodes, the retiring Mayor of Christ" church. Mr H. F7 Wigrain, the May-or-elect, said that the city should not be bounded by the belts, and in touching 'on the question of a greater Christchurch said that the outside local bodies could assist the city and the city could assist them.
