This time thay-were put under lock and key in the pavilion, -the door of which they vainly attempted to force with a spade. ; This morning they were givon twenty minutes of "bucket brigade" (carrying water), and were severely lectured on their conduct by two of the officers, after which they were allowed to go, probably sadder and wiser for their experiences. The Defence Department has made a grant of £200 to each volunteer district in the colony, such money to be expended in encouragement of rifle shooting. It is stipulated by the department that all competitions must be open to members iof the Permanent Artillery, militia, volunteers, rifle., clubs-,, and . civilians .
