RIFLES' CLOCK COMPETITION.

: Some little diversion (says the Haweia Star) was caused in camp on : "Wednesday qight by the action of four youths who thought'they were clever. enough to elude Jxe gnard and gain admission to the camp it a late hditir. Hbwever,:tHey were soon detected, and promptly lodged in the guard'tent, where they made things lively for a while by singing, yelling, etc. After , i time, they endeavoured- to escape by julling down the tent. This they did a ■ iecona time, when one of iiem managed to efEect his escape, and the others gay© .he guard a considerable amountpf chasiag before being recaptured. This time thay-were put under lock and key in the pavilion, -the door of which they vainly attempted to force with a spade. ; This morning they were givon twenty minutes of "bucket brigade" (carrying water), and were severely lectured on their conduct by two of the officers, after which they were allowed to go, probably sadder and wiser for their experiences. The Defence Department has made a grant of £200 to each volunteer district in the colony, such money to be expended in encouragement of rifle shooting. It is stipulated by the department that all competitions must be open to members iof the Permanent Artillery, militia, volunteers, rifle., clubs-,, and . civilians .
