The Taranaki Co-operative Bacoi. Company, Limited.
In another column will be found an "abridged prospectus of the above Company which is being formed, on i purely co-operative lines, to acquire, carry on, and extend Mr Drake's j factory and business at Fitzroy. The capital is fixed at £10,000 in ' 2000 shares of £5 each, and the ! provisional directors have ■ been selected by meetings of farmers from all parts of the district. The purchase price of the factory, as agreed upon between Mr Drake and the provisional directors, is £4250, and the, factory and plant have been valued- bj' Mr Runciman, of Eltham, on behalf of the directors, at £4242, including anything for the laga'd or the goodwill of the business. Tlie methods adopted in the formation of co-operative dairy compan 1 ics will be folio .ved as closely u& tossiblo, but a new /vet of Parliament makes it comptulsory to call up a certain proportion of capital, .ience the calls on application and allotment. All future calls will be deducted from purchase money of pigs at the rate *»f is isd i-er pig supplied by shareholders. The Bank, to which a joint and several j bond is to be given as security, finds the balance of the capital just as in ohe dairy companies, and this liability is reduced automatically as oigs come in and calls are deducted. Tlie business, as conducted by Mr Drake, in eleven months of 1900 returned, as per certified statement to be found in the full prospectus, a net profit of 15£ per cent. This >vas on a total of 3479, pigs received, and it is claimed with double the output the profits would be proportionately much larger, since exponses would not increase in anything like the same ratio. It is proposed to erect killing stations at various points, which, it is stated, will effect a saving of at least a farthing a pound in freight, that is, the difference between charges on live pigs and carcasses ; in addition to which the farmers would be able to see their p^gs, weighed, and there woultij be an improvement in condition due to the pigs being less knocked about. To maintain the striek^y co-oper-ative principle, it is provided that no one who is not a supplier of pigs •nay hold a seat on the directorate. The share list is v « clp?e on the first of February, so that no time is to bo lost. Further particulars may be obtained from Mr L. M. Monteath, the Secretary pro torn , or from the various branches of tho Bank of ,New South Wales in the ' district.
