THE NEW YEAR'S DAY PICNIC.
fTo the Editor.). <.- ..••;> Sir,— l hear that the secretary of the Friendly SoSjeties' Picnic Committee has received a notice of motion rescinding the resolution passed on Friday to hold the picnic m February and uphold tho motion, which was carried by fifteen to four, to' hold it on New Year's Day. I think we as citizens ought to be ashameu of ourselves if we cannot run two picnics on the same day. The,population, of this town is between 4000 and 5000, and I agree with His Worship the Mayor that botih can be run on the same day. Now the Societies h&ve got permission from Mr Piper, the manager of the railways for this district, anfl the citizens have not even up to this day- Then again, because one Lodge disagrees with holding the picnic on New Year's Day are wo to give it up just to please them?. The plea set forth is that we should give in to the citizens, but there is some other motive. The • Rechabites and the Waircka Courts were the only ones whb did not agree with it, but the Waireka gave way to the majority, but the Itechabites not only insulted their own delegates by taking it ouf of their hands, but instead of giving way like Waireka Court they wrote to all Societies condemning the motion although the proposition -was seconded by one of its- own deleg&tes: As regards the second portion of the notice of motion .that Lodges not agreeing to hold the picnic on New Year's Day withdraw their delegates, this I agree is perfectly right. The other Lodges can carry out a most successful picnic without them, and hundreds have expressed their opinion that New Year's- Day. is ,the proper day to hold both picnics,' knd" that there is plenty of .room for both, and hundreds of townspeople will only be too glad to get an enjoyable day's outing in the country. Therefore, the Lodges in favour go ahead and make a success of it by yourselves, and leave the Lodge members out who are not men enough to bow to the majority. Trusting, Mr Editor, you will excuse me for writing so long a letter, and that you will express your opinion on the subject. — I am, etc., ( NEW YEAR'S DAY.
