Wellington- November 19.— The postmaster as' Cheviot, telegraphing to. the Secretary of the Department at 8 • a.v*., says : " I have to report another depressing night. < Since- my last' there have been- a number of minor disturbano*& intermingled with one or two more severe and serious shock*. -None, however, 'have' dona additional damage,^ ' chiefly because praciicaliy aHnthe damage r from which the settlemen^can suffer has
already been done.' I regret to say that after the promise of much needed cool^ ' ing tain-last night the weather has againchanged thw-toorning, and iB oppressively close with a; scorching, son. Tbis will* add to the troubles of the farmers, whose land w-patchedi, and crops ate, : ''• consequently In. nearly, all cases failures, - The; Christchurch 'newspapers have already started a relief i and. It must not -■ be understood, however, that the settlers are destitute. Almost without exception their homes are badly damaged, and in some oases destroyed, while one 01 more business people in McKenzie itself, who ; have no available have lost their all. IK is these latter wha will benefit by the relief fund, the chief use of which will not be to buy food, bat to enable them to make another start. , The impression abroad that people are absolutely destitute is incorrect, though ■"" several are ruined."
