The Taranaki Herald. PUBLISHED DAILY. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 28, 1901.

i Captain Edwin wired at 12.45 to-day [ — West to south-west and south-eas I gale ; glass rise ; sea heavy ; tides high ■weather cold. t A feature of the Harbour Board pro I ceedings on Friday wrs the fact that Mi i Garten voted on the side of the Chairraai ia connection with the sand pump ques tion. Before the Harbour Board adjoarnei at a few minutes to 4 o'clock on Friday Mr Ward objected to the business beini left uncompleted, and contended that th Board should hold another sitting nex week to complete the ordinary bnsinea ' on the order paper. Some members of the Harbour Boar were not in a very amiable mood at th meeting on Friday, as will be seen fron our report on the fixed sand pump ques tion The Chairman (Vr Maxwell) am Mr Connett were again at cross purpose: and many hard " knocks " were given 01 both sides. Quite recently Signor Antona Traverss a merchant of Milan, died, leaving a fox tune of £600,000. His will was dispute* by his heira, of whom there were so man; that 105 lawyers took part in the mat So great were their expenses that eve i tally £400,000 was divided atnongat th lawyers in fees, and barely £200,0j0 lef for the heirs to share. Sharland's Journal, which is evidentl, an authority on such matter.-*, has th following: — "The Kight iloii. tho Pre mier evidently desires to see tho popu lation of the «olony increase, for he in troduced a Bill in the House ort the Bti ult., for the Prohibition of the Sale o Preventives. It would take soinethin more than Mr Seddon's Bill to stop th. sale of these articles, and a yeate physiologist than be to naone all tue pre ventives." R.J.S., please note. People who are very dainty are some times said to have only the appetite of i canary bird. But a scientific sceptic re cently resolved to find out just what th appetite of a canary is. He weighed , canary, and found it weighed .247 grain* or something over half an ounce.- H also weighed all the food, and found tha the bird eats thirty-two times his weigh every month, or actually more than hi weight every day } showing that the pro verbial pig is a light eater as comparei with -the "canary. The caterer' for the banquet to M Newton. King (Mr D. Thomson, pro prietor of the Criterion Hotel) must b< complimented upon the excellence of th< spread provided, and upon the genera completeness of the arrangements. Th 1 tables were tastefully set oat, and th" quality and variety of viands and liquor provided were the subject of very grea commendation. The usual toast of " Th< Caterer " was received with .oheen foi Mr and Mrs Thomson. Mr Connett, at the Harbour Boarc ■ meeting on Friday, made a couple of per sjnal explanations. He quoted a news paper repoit of the Board's proceedmgi to chow that he had warned the Chairinar about the Railway Department taking uj their siding into tha Mount Eliot reserve also that the Board had fixed the price oi the sections that were applied for in connection with tho proposed Post Office site in Brougham-street. In face of these fucts the Chairman had charged him witb making untruthful statements. From what transpired at the Harboui Board meeting ou Friday, it would appear that the Chairman authorised the Secretary to advertise in newspapers in the four principal centres only for applications for the position of a certifi cated person to fill the position of foreman and superintendent of the fixed ■and pump at the harbour. In response to the advertisements some 60 applicationi were received by the Board, but these were not opened at Friday's meeting, as it was decided to have another .month's trial of the sand pump, and the engineer was therefore requested to engage a competent man for that period. The annual meeting of the Carrington Road Cricket Club will be held on Thursday, Octobor 3rd, at Mr McEwen's residence at 8 p.m. sharp All members and intending members cordially invited. HOLLOWAY'S OINTMENT AND FILLS.— More precious than Gold.— Diarrhoea, dysentery and cholera are through the summer's heat carrying off the young, as the winter's cola destroys the aged. In the most acute cases, where tho internal medicines cannot be retained, the greatest relief will immediately result from rubbing Holloway's soothing Ointment over tho abdomen. The friction should bo frequent and brisk, to insure the penetration of a large portion of the unguent. This Ointment calms the excited peristaltic action and soothes the pain. Both vomiting and griping yield to it ; where fruit or vegetables have originated the malady, it is proper Co remove all indigested matter from the bowels by a moderate dose of Hollo way 's Pills before using the Ointment,
