Christchurch played Merrivale, and aftei a very smart game won by 6 to 3. Tho winners scored two splendid tries, and the game was very fast. ' This means that Christnhurch and Merivale will have to play off for the championship. For the winners, Thrown played a splendid game, running vary strongly. He was well supported by Bell and McLean, but Elder was inclined to loaf. Beckett, Hill, and Barker were the best of the forwards. Wareham was by far tho best visiting back, his try being a smart piece of work. Of the forwards Pembloton and Putt were the most conspicuous. ' The Star-Tukapa Senior return Cup match, to be played in the Recreation Grounds on Thursday afternoon, promises to be as evenly conte3ted as the first meeting of these teams. The betting on the match is even money. P>oth teams arc in active training, and should strip fit andjwell on the day. Mr Tilley, of Wanganui, who refereeel in the first match, has been asked to act in that capacity again. Tt is reported that the Star team intend to dispense with wing players, and play the four half-back game, but thin report is given for what it is worth. Dr. Fookes, who played centre-quarter for Tukapa last match, will play wing three-quarter on vThursday. The question is being asked whether any of the Taranaki playe s will be 1 included in the New Zealand team to play ag.iinst N.S. Wales. The claims of Allen, Humphries, Fookes, and O'Dowda arc advocatod locally.
