FOOTBALL.

STAR I. V. INGLE WOOD I. Owing to the incessant rains exper•c'eed lately this match was not played iv the Recreation Grounds on Thursday afternoon, but on Mr F. Richards' property on the Avenue Road. The game which was witnessed by some 400 spec ■ tators, resulted in a win for Star by 9 points (3 tries) to 3 points (a penalty goal). The ground, on which a junior' match had just been played, was pretty greasy and several large pools of water did not add to the comfort of players. Both sides put strong teams in the field, and each side was confident of victory. From the kick-off Inglewood assumed the aggressive, but some excellent passing runs by the Star backs relieved the pressure. The Inglewood men were strong in the open rushes, which were, i however, nullified by the clean passing of the Star backs. A feature [ of the first half was the passing runs by the Star backs, Humphries initiating them, and Allen, Carter, Beckett, and at times Ladner keeping the ball moving. Inglewood, however, collared determinedly, and several times stopped what looked like a certain score. Flay had been in progress a considerable time before any score was registered. From a passing rush among the Star backs Carter finally passed to Beckett, who crossed the visitors' line, and scored near the corner. Stroud took the kick, and made a splendid attempt, the ball striking the cross-bar, and bouncing back. Star, 3 ; Inglewood 0. Shortly after the Star backs got on another run, and Carter making a smart dash touched down, behind the Inglewood goal. Stroud's kick went wide. Star, 6 ; Inglewood. 0. Inglewood made several hard rallies, bift the Star defence was good, and half-time was called without further score. At the start of the second half Inglewood put in some strong work, and the Star men had their hands full in repelling the attacks. The play afterwards became pretty even, the ball travelling about rapidly. Finally Inglewood got a free kick in front of the Star goal, and Turner footed a neat goal. Star, ,6; Inglewood, 3. Play after this- became exciting, both sides playing a sound offensive and defensive game. About ten minutes before time Carter snapped up the ball near tht centre, and making a strong run along the wing he badly beat a couple of Inglew«od backs, and scored a third try for Star. Stroud's kick hit one of the batten uprights on the goal. Star, 9; Inglewood,' 3. Both sides played desperately till call of time, the ball being then about the centre. Both teams played well, but the Star team had the advantage when it c vme to open systematic work, to which they owed their victory. Mr R. H. Kivell, of Stratford, made a capable referee, giving his decisions promptly. . STAR 11. V. STRATFORD H. This match, which was played before, the Senior fixture, resulted in a draw, neither team scoring. The game was^ well contested throughout, Star making* most of the attacks. Mr Kivell also refereed in this match, and gave general sitisfaction. In the first half he ordered off Walker, a Stratford player, for s foul play. Walker'^ conduct after being ordered off was a matter of comment auong the spectators. Towards the finish of the game Brown, a Stratford player, got his face injured in a collision, and had 'o be taken in a cab to town for treatment. TUKAPA I. V. 'STRATFORD I. The Tutapa seniors journeyed to Stratford on Thursday to meet the local Seniors in the second round. The T«kapa team fairly outclassed Stratford winning by 18 points to' nil. The 1 Stratford team left the field twenty minutes before time, the reason apparently being that they had had enough of football to last them for the day. For the winners Dr Fook s scored 2 trier, Dawes scored 2, and W. Fookes notched one; and Dawes kicked a penalty goal. Mr Sutton, of Hawera, made an efficient* referee. STAR HI. V. INGLEWOOD m. This match, played at Inglewood on Thursday afternoon, resulted in a win f o - btar by 9 points (three tries scored by Pycrof t) to nil.
