WHERE IS THE NORTHERN "SLEEPY HOLLOW" ? TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —As one who often visits and takes pleasure in the attractions of your pretty township, will you "aUow me to represent a few anomalies which occur to the mind of a passing tourist, and do not compare favourably with— may I say-it ? — perhaps more progressive centres not possessing the same natural advantages as those enjoyed by you: — (1} A seaside resort without a public bathing place or boats for hire. ( 2) An " Esplanade " without. an approach calculated to admit more than one person at a time, and eventually losing itself in a sandhill. (3) Plenty of churches — but no steeple. The Parish Church with a High Church choir and Low Church vestry. (4) A Town Hall without a town clock; the money for which, lam informed, has been subscribed. (5) A railway station without a clock. (6 ) A post office site without a post office thereon. (7) A main street blocked up with a mound of earth 50 feet high. (8) One of the most beautiful garden parks in the colonies, commonly known by the name of the " Wreck," (?). Why are these things thus ? . Would such towns as, say, Wauganui or Hawera be so apathetic ? — Yours sorrowfully^ZViator. New Plymouth, 15tb July, 1901.
