The usual monthly meeting of th« Raleigh Town Board was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs Ogle (chair* man), Fraser, Chappell, Pearce, Knight, and Hignett. The minutes of the prenoui meetings were read and confirmed. Mr S. Hill, District Valuer, waited On the Board in reference to the charg* made by the Department for valuing, pnd seated that after going fully into thft matter with the chairman and clerk, that chey had arrived at the sum of L 5 Ss as a fair and reasonable charge. The members : considered the amount a reasonable one, ' and agreed to accept it. The Works Committee reported that , most of the work left in their hands to deal with had received attention, and that / the rest of them were either in hand or ( would be so shortly. Also that the fore- '* man reported that it looked as if the .' portion of Big Jim a pit allotted to the Board would soon run out. Mr Johnston wrote giving an estimate of forming High and other streets: j '.- The matter of the erection of a lamp - : post ou Manukarihi Boad was left in the ', ' hands of the Works Committee to deal ,'\ with. »- The Clerk was instructed to communi* •; cate with the constable in regard to the •'• by-law re vehicles curving lights, and to ; • instruct him to see that the by-law was ,- regarded. A letter was received from the Taranaki Agricultural Society re forming alocal committee to further the interests \ of the Show. It was resolved to refer the letter to the Horticultural Society, with V a request that they should take the matter up, and in the event of their not doing so i tho Board will endeavour to carry out the . wish of the Society. Mr Bedmond wrote that he had referred . the Board's letter re drain to tho owner. The Clerk was instructed to ako communicate. Messrs Chard and Tate, on application, were granted an extension of time for the delivery of metal. Applications for transfer of properties from Mr T. Wright to Mrs Ward and Miss Chevannes were granted. Mr Hignett moved his notice of motion re erection of a library building. The motion was seconded by the Chairman, and carried. It was also resolved, That for the purr ose of giving effect to the Public Libraries Act, 1869, immediate steps be taken under section 8 of the Act to set aside reserves, to be hereafter specified, bringing in a revenue of not less than L4O per annum; and that until ' such time as the Board is in a position to erect a larger building, a suitable room be erected on section 1, block 90, for the purpose of a library and reading-room. Tho Chairman suggested that the Institute trustees be approached in reference to handing over the books and furniture in that building, and Messrs Fraser and Chappell were appointed as a deputation to give effect to the suggestion. The Chairman-was authorised to interview the Bank manager, re overdraft The matter of spending a portion of the subsidy received from the Government on tne Soldiers' Cemetery was'left in the hands of the Cemetery Committee to deal with. . „ After passing accounts for £71 15s lid, the meeting adjourned. Mr Harkness's remarks at the Agricultural meeting in. regard, to 'holding" the Show at Inglewood, Stratford, and possibly Waitara, were in very poor taste. Evidently he thinks our town is the last extremity in which such a function should be held, but was not above receiving assistance, if such could bo got These petty little jealousies do more to injure societies than anything else, and it is to be hoped that other members hold broader views on the subject than Mr Harkness. The annual meeting of the Clifton football Club takes place at the Bridge Hotel on Thursday evening. The mortal remains of little Ernent White were interred in the Waitara Cemetery yesterday. The respect in which the family are held was evidenced by the large cortege of people who attended the last rites. The paU-bearen were six of the departed's school oomrades. Wreaths and crosses, sent by friends and school children, covered the coffin. The funeral service was imprea- | sively read by the Rev J. S. Garliek.
