fl'KB PBEB9 ASSOCIATION. ] FIRE AT EIVERTON. Invercargill, April 1. By fire at Riverton on Saturday night, Moore's Hall and four shops, all of wood, occupied by J. Moore (tailor), J. Lylo (mining agent), F. Nash (painter), and A. Anderson (solicitor), were destroyed. CONFERENCE OF HORTICULTURISTS, &c. Duxkdiv, April 1. For the conference of horticulturists, pomologists, viticnlturists, and entomologists, to be held during the currency of the Winter Show, 70 or 80 representatives from all parts of the colony are expected, and there is a prospect of delegates from Raratonga and other islands" being present, as well as Government experts. The steamship companies have agreed to reduce the fares by 10 per cent., and the Government will pay half the remaining faro of the delegates. Societies have been asked to forward collections of fruit, for which trophies and medals will be given, but there will be no individual competition. APPEAL COURT. Wei.mxutos, April 1. Judgment in the Porirua case is reserved. The Court is now hearing an application by the Wellington City Council to set aside claims for compensation amounting t0L25,000 for a small strip of hind in Willis and Harbour-streets. Owing to inadvertence the time was allowed to lapse within which action could be taken to contest the claim. The Council contends the claims are greatly in excew of the the true value, and that the Court has inherent jurisdiction to prevent injustice being done. BRICKLAYERS' STRIKE. Altki.and, April 1.
