The Harbour Hoard Secretary.
REINSTATEMENT OF SALARY. Prn«4i" \.nt to notice of motion Mr Ward moved, That the secretary's salary be reinstated to what he received prior to the reduction in 1894, and that to do so the salary be raised by LSO. In speaking on the motion he pointed out that the work of the Board had increased considerably since 1894. and he quoted figures to show how much it had been augmented. The secretary's salary compared to 1894 was absolutely L 56 less, and he thought as an act of justice the Board should unanimously agree to tbe LSO extra being voted. The Chairman said he had great pleasure in seconding the motion. He was one who bad been instrumental in .getting tbe salary reduced, as he held at the time that there was room for cutting down expeuses. Personally he knew how much the work of the Board had increased, and it was a fair act of justice to reinstate the salary. He concluded by stating it would be hard to find Mr Rennell'a equal as a secretary to the Board. Mr Hignott supported the reinstatement. He recognised Mr Rennell's worth, and thought it was only just to make the reinstatement. Mr Sarten opposed the increase. He admitted Mr Rennell's ability and perhaps they could not get a better man, but at the same time he considered applications should be called for such appointments like tbe harbourmaster's position. Mr Connett said he would support tbe resolution. He went on to state how efficiently Mr Reunell carried out his work as secretary. Mr Cliff supported the motion. The motion was then put and carried, the increase to date from January 1 last.
